Staying Away From the Scale

Most people tell me that they’re afraid of the scale. Hell, I get a little frightened by it too. It’s kind of nerve racking when you put things into a certain perspective. Let me give you an idea. 

I started lifting when I was in high school, but it was driven by the sports teams I was a part of; mostly track and field. I was a pole vaulter so I actually needed some upper body strength. This led to me devoting quite a bit of my time to lifting weights. I got a little more serious in college and shortly thereafter, I became somewhat obsessed. Then, life hit me. 

Instead of spending two and a half hours in the gym 5-6 days a week, my life demanded my time be put into something else. It’s scary to think that at age 26, I weigh almost the equivalent to what I weighed in high school. With that said, here come the mind games. 

We all play mind games on ourselves. It’s a constant battle. Try to remember that just because your life has changed along with your priorities doesn’t mean you have to be unhealthy. Even though I’m not in the gym as much, I still eat well and take care of myself. I make sure to get enough sleep, drink enough water, and for the love of god, nourish myself to the best of my ability. 

Moral is, don’t let the scale scare you. Try to discern what’s actually happening to your body rather than immediately thinking something terrible is wrong with you because of a decrease or increase in weight. If you’re the person who’s incredibly aware of what’s happening to your body, practice healthy habits to fight the mind games that you’ll put on yourself in regards to your health.
